Sure, all most players see is Paladin = Plate, and any logic ends there. Many ppl decide for us that we should only and ever wear plate, and we are considered ninja's if we dare to wear anything else.
This is holydin hell, and it happens to all of us at one time or another. Personally, I'll take just about anything that is an upgrade, although I favor plate. Just to make sure I don't screw up on my end, my Pawn addon has been configured to only base it's holydin gear calculation, based upon SP, Critical Strike Rating, Haste Rating and MP5, ignoring Armor Value and stats.
Basically the only thing you can do is try to group with ppl you know are smart enough to look past 'Paladin = Plate', and hope for the best.

I would say ok you can shard that be i'll be damned if you ever see a decent healer grouping with you again thats not a @#$%ing clothy. It all comes down to ignorance is bliss and everyone is an expert on your class and spec until you tell them to reroll and do a better job then you if they think they are so high and mighty (the irony is thats why i'm a healer, i didn't want to be a hypocrite so i practiced what i preached xD)

Also i was told that on a raid they would DE an item like this rather than give it to the pala even if it was an upgrade.
It might not be always cost-effective, but consider carrying around some shards to trade for gear that is headed for DE. This way the raid gets their wanted result, and you get your upgrade.

Or tell them to get %^&*ed and bubble hearth in the middle of the next boss fight.

Although that may be a solution, it's just caving in to morons who think they know your class better than you. You should never have to pay for gear except with DKP, period. If they won't let you take the item, then it's their loss. For purposes of keeping your reputation, I'd suggest making a screenshot of said item, compared to your item, when it's being DE'd, so that you'll later have some counterproof, when you're being badmouthed for being a bad healer in trade or general chat.

Most healer plate has mp5 now. To be honest, a lot of the best itemized gear for holy paladins is elemental shaman gear that doesn't have hit on it, anyone who says you should only wear plate lacks a basic understanding of how to itemize a holy paladin.

I know this has nothing to do with anything, but I'd just like to say:
Ding! 100,000 topics!
Carry on.
