Pit of Saron Impressions

So after much struggle and not a single WoW reinstall, I finally managed to get my PTR Client up and working. Eager to test the Pit of Saron, I transferred my
paladin
(who is actually a tank, so his Ret gear isn't that great), I went to the place, got a group together in a few mere instants... and could not enter. Apparently having done so many phasing quests in Icecrown, I was not able to see the instance portals. Which I fixed by simply copying a pre-made character, paladin tank as well, and, oh wonders - I was able to enter the instance soon after my first failure!
So this blog is going to be about my first impressions of the place. A word of caution before we start - I was not able to fight the final boss, Scourgelord Tyrannus. He was just not there. Kind people in the LFG channel politely informed me that he should be there, so I guess I had just encountered a bug. I will try again later and update the blog with impressions of the fight against him as well.
You and your party will appear in the southernmost side of the map, on a rise, kind of where the teeth of the distorted skull-like segment is. Oddly enough there was not visible portal there - walking to the end of the rise would teleport you outside, but only if you did it on the right spot... so instance exit portal will probably be added in the near future.
The rise you start on is fairly clear of enemies. In fact, it's absolutely clear. But as soon as you descend (and don't get me wrong, it's a small rise), you will find plenty of mobs to fight - skeletons, necromancers, ghouls, Ymirjar, and even a few proto-drakes. Between the (many) trash pulls, you will see slaves - I saw Horde slaves almost entirely, but that probably has to do with the fact that I play Horde. Anyway, as you step near a slave, they say something, or make a gesture to indicate that they had almost lost hope, and then run off to the rise at the beginning (I think that's where they were going...). We chose to clear all the trash and free all the slaves (except for those in the giant pit in the middle, since they were very few, some were Alliance, and there didn't seem to be a way to climb up once we fell).
Well, we cleared all the trash and decided to take a left turn, which meant that we would fight Ick & Krick first, and Garfrost second. We killed some plague beasts, and found Ick (a bigger plague beast) & Krick (pretty big leper gnome riding Ick) in some sort of improvised lab, where they were supposed to build a flesh giant I think. Well, that didn't work - we interrupted them.
The fight was surprisingly easy, even considering that none of us had done it before. My explanation "He will throw bad stuff at you, don't stand in it" was both accurate and sufficient. For the majority of the fight (down to 10-20% I think), the fight will be stupidly simple. Krick will either poison people (Poison DoT, removable), or toss vials of poison that break when they hit the ground and leave a damaging puddle (like
Giftflasche
in Trial of the Champion). The other fun thing is Krick yelling at Ick to pick a different target. The target (a random one) will be Pursued for ~10 seconds, similarly to Anub'arak's spikes and the Flame Leviathan. I don't think Ick gains any damage buff during this time. After the 10 seconds expire he will go back to the tank - who can also be pursued.
When the boss' health hits 10-20% (or it might be time-based...), Krick will start casting Explosion Barrage. For the duration of the spell (~10-15 seconds?) small bubbles will spawn on the ground. They will start growing and soon explode, hitting everybody in proximity.
When you kill Ick, Krick will engage you, but he has low health and damage, and should die before even casting a decent spell.
After you defeat Ick & Krick, you will find the slaves you had previously freed in a sort of a camp, their leader mentioning that they will help you fight Scourgelord Tyrannus. We moved on, cleared whatever trash we had left, and engaged the second boss - Forgemaster Garfrost - soon after Krick's death.
I am honestly not sure how we should've started the fight. There are some 10 skeleton smiths around Garfrost (each with the measly 25k health), and the boss himself (a flesh giant) patrols around his forge - very slowly. As soon as I pulled one of the Smiths, the boss came charging at me as if I had touched his wife's dress, and not some skeleton. Anyway, we killed the Smiths with AoE quickly and tried to figure what on Azeroth we need to do with the boss.
First thing we noticed, the boss has an AoE aura that does two things: does frost damage, and applies a debuff that increases frost damage taken, stacking of course. It seemed like the aura was ticking every 1-2 seconds, but the debuff lasted 2 seconds only too, so if one of us had resisted a tick, the whole debuff would fall off before the next tick. The proper way though, I think, was to have people occasionally hide behind the huge saronite boulders Garfrost throws at random people, so the debuff can fall off, and then resume DPS/healing.
Occasionally Garfrost would run to one of his forges and grab a huge icy sword - apparently that increased his frost damage by some 200%. Good time for the tank to lose line of sight and have his debuff drop, because it stacks
quickly
. But between AoE Frost damage, stacking debuff that increases Frost damage taken, flying saronite boulders, and big bad icy sword, we managed to slay the Forgemaster.
As soon as we were done, the slaves rushed in, took over the forges, and started working feverishly on them. And that's where we hit a brick wall. We continued towards the cave shown on the map, killed whatever trash was there (spread out), entered the cave (ice shards will fall from the ceiling, just avoid them, they have texture on the ground, like Hodir), passed through... and found no boss. The platform where the final boss should have been was absolutely empty. I guess we could have talked to the slaves (who had disappeared somehow), or we could've killed Garfrost first and then Ick & Krick... but we didn't. So we got no boss.
That's all. I really hope I can add something about Tyrannus tomorrow -
or maybe one of you can?
