You should play a Destruction Warlock if:
You enjoy having the option between dealing direct damage or damage over time.
You enjoy having extremely hard hitting abilities.
You enjoy being knowledgeable about encounters.
You don't mind having a slightly less mobile caster spec.
Changes from WoD to Legion
Legion brought many changes into the game, as well for Destruction Warlocks. We are now a 5
based specialization. There were many abilities moved, removed and added as talents. Here I list the most notable things:
We get a new ability called:
(3 charges, 45 seconds cooldown)
and ticks of
Feuer und Schwefel
were all added as talents.
(1 Shard) are your Shard spenders.
Dark Soul got removed and instead
cooldown got decreased to 3 minutes.
Grimoire der Überlegenheit
allows you now to use a permanent
instead of improved pets.
Changes in 7.1
Patch 7.1 brought on a few changes to Destruction Warlock, while the other two specializations receive a little more attention. Here is the short list of notable changes:
have swapped talent locations.
now does 13% more damage.
Changes in 7.1.5
Patch 7.1.5 brings some very exciting changes for Destruction. It has altered our playstyle on different fight types - shifting us more toward
damage than ever before. We will also see use out of the newly introduced
talent. First, we will talk about changes that affect all 3 specializations:
duration was increased to 15 minutes, up from 6 minutes. This is a nice change for longer encounters like Odyn. This can also be useful in PvP.
Imp, Succubus, Voidwalker, Felhunter and Felguard damage was increased by 20%. This heavily reinforces the use of
Grimoire der Dienstbarkeit
, especially after the Synergy/Sacrifice nerfs.
now heals you for 20% of your maximum health, whether the target is actually affected by the fear or not. This makes the ability usable in raid encounters, as bosses can not be feared.
base duration is now 15 seconds - up to a maximum of 35 seconds. This is a nice buff that reinforces the use of the talent in single target and cleave situations. WE HAVE A DPS COOLDOWN AGAIN!
Below are all of the changes for Destruction in 7.1.5:
The damage done by most Destruction spells has been increased by 4%.
now reduces the cast time of your next two
by 30%. This effect stacks up to 4 times. This is a nice change from the duration-based buff we had before. We can now double cast
in the opener or while moving with no repercussions.
received roughly a 40% buff, making it a powerful choice for single target situations. It also now splashes 50% of its damage to nearby targets, and is no longer affected by
Doom Bolt damage was buffed roughly 30%. Even with this change, it will not be more powerful than
Herr der Flammen
Grimoire der Opferung
damage was reduced by 25%. This talent will only ever be used in heavy AoE scenarios.
Grimoire der Überlegenheit
now reduces your Doom Guard damage by 20%. This was done to counter-balance the Doom Guard buff to prevent Supremacy from becoming too powerful.
talent was introduced on the level 30 tier of our talent tree, replacing Mana Tap (removed). This will be a very powerful choice for all situations, provided you can keep track of the buff. It is less of a hassle to use than the previous option, as it only requires you to press one button as opposed to the Mana Tap (removed) +
dancing we did beforehand.
has been redesigned. It will now replace
and will generate 1 guaranteed
, plus an additional
on kill. This option is simply outclassed by the other two options on the level 15 tier of our talent tree. It will likely not be taken for any reason in PvE.
have swapped positions on the talent tree. This is likely the most controversial change for Destruction in 7.1.5. Fear not, it will not make that much of an impact overall. It allows us to select between 3 viable options on the level 30 tier and 3 viable options on the level 60 tier.
Artifact Trait now also affects
, as it replaces
and thus should benefit from the Artifact appropriately.
Overall, I would say that Patch 7.1.5 is a positive one in terms of changes to Destruction. We are looking at more options for talents in Mythic+ dungeons and more powerful setups than in the previous patch all around.
What makes Destruction Warlocks special?
Destruction Warlocks are one of the most versatile classes in the game. We excel in cleave while being decent for other situations. We are incredibly intimidating as we wield a powerful toolkit that assists us in making the most of every situation. With our portals and combination of deadly fire and chaos spells, we are certainly a force to be reckoned with.
