Ever wish Wow had a build in spell checker?
I've created an addon, called
Misspelled
, that watches chat messages you type, highlighting any misspelled words it find along the way.
Misspelled words may be right-clicked to get a list of replacement suggestions.
Nothing to configure, just install and use.
Currently includes US English and German dictionaries.

Currently the addon uses 5.7Mb of memory. The dictionary is borrowed from HunSpell (the same one used in FireFox/Chrome/OpenOffice), and stores words using prefix and suffix compression. I also store precached phonetic codes for each word to speed suggestion lookups.
Looking up if a word is spelled correctly and generating suggestions is fast enough that you shouldn't notice the addon running.

Words in all upper case, and words with numbers are skipped. I included all the Wow zones and Wrath dungeon and raid boss names. I also included the words: Leatherworking, mana, and Jewelcrafting. I'm sure there are many many more that could be added; but it's sure nice to be able to correctly spell Ahn'kahet, whenever you need to. :)
Along with those Wow specific propor nouns, your Friends and Guild members are also added as valid words. They are available as suggestions for misspelled words.
Just right click, and select "Add to Dictionary", to permanently add any other word to your own user dictionary.
Please report any problems or errors you have while using Misspelled.
Thanks.

Unless you only have 512 megs of memory, even a 15 megabyte addon is not impactful to your performance. The only thing that matters in that case is how much CPU it uses and whether it will impact your play. I would gather that since this spell-checks what you're typing into chat, it has zero impact on gameplay when you're not chatting. 5 megs sitting in a table in memory is inert :).

Ya, you generally don't need to worry about addon memory usage if you've got 4gb. An addon's CPU usage is always most important for getting the best in game FPS.

Not sure if this would be advertising, but whatever.
Seems like this would be a great addon for all those twelve year old kids in trade. And I'm going to have some fun linking to my guild master who cannot spell at all..
I would download it, but my computer is slow enough already. But thanks anyway, I'll pass the word of a long over-due addon.

Ha, I should just add, an auto-responder, advertising Misspelled, whenever it detects a misspelled word in Trade chat. :)

Certainly never claimed I could spell my way out of a paper sack. In fact that's the reason I created the addon.
Sorta-kind-a helps me looks less like an idiot.

A new version of Misspelled has been released that includes a Spanish (esES) dictionary, along with German and US English. There is an options interface page where you can manually select what dictionary to load.
This version includes improved suggestion generation and more speed improvements.
UTF8 O-my, o-my!
Support has been added throughout for UTF8 multi-byte encodings. From this point on, It should be very easy to add additional International dictionaries.

I've released an update to Misspelled (version r36) that adds support for WIM (Wow Instant Messenger) and a French spell-checking dictionary.

I love you <3
Thanks so much, I am spelling dyslectic and I hate my own writing ingame.
This solved it all!
Much kudos for this.
