The Mage Tower has returned and brought with it some controversy and quick changes! Dratnos and Tettles break down what's been happening in this GG WoW video, and give their thoughts about the Timewalking Mage Tower experience.
Very early into the new Mage Tower's life, players encountered more resistance than they'd expected and
Blizzard quickly posted their intent
to tone down the outliers on the higher end of difficulty. Tettles points out that the expectation of Mage Tower difficulty may have been set by how challenging it was in Antorus gear in 7.3, rather than when it initially released and players were two tiers behind in Nighthold gear, as that version of the Tower was similarly brutal in its difficulty.
Since then, Blizzard has mostly buffed rather than nerfed the Mage Tower, by
nerfing the scaling of specific items
that turned out to be very powerful for the challenges, though it's worth noting that the optimal gearing and consumables strategy for the Tower remains largely to collect obscure items from old content to get extra sockets or effects that scale better to the Mage Tower's item level 50 ceiling. Dratnos and Tettles take issue with this being the optimal strategy for the Mage Tower, as they like the idea of content that is based on skill rather than gear, but if the content is going to have gear based solutions they'd rather them not be based on what happens to scale best through the expansions.
More recently, a set of nerfs have been applied to the Blood DK and Guardian Druid challenges - a minor change to the behavior of the adds preventing them from moving while casting, though for Guardian Druids they can still move while channeling down. This is a very small nerf that might indicate a conservative approach from Blizzard to preserve the prestige and difficulty of the Tower, though this is somewhat surprising given the speed that they said they would be doing nerfs in the first place. However, after this video was release, Blizzard
hotfixed in more nerfs
to the Mage Tower.
What do you think? Should the Mage Tower be nerfed? Do you like the scaling system? Is the short time that the Tower is available a problem, or the fact that Shadowlands systems do not work in it, or is it great as is? Let us know in the comments!
