WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-Up
Hello! Welcome to the 210th edition of the WoW Economy Weekly Wrap-up!
This week we discuss the legendary market now that details of the covenant legendary has been revealed on the PTR. We also go in-depth to discuss one of the often maligned and misrepresented gold making methods - Transmog Farming. If you are new to gold making, and wondering what all this is about, then we have you covered with a great video from Erosium and a round-up from several gold makers of what sold well for 2021.
My name is
Samadan
and I'll be your guide through the World of Gold Making!
I have a video version of the blog and my gold making activities this week if you prefer the spoken word here..
9.2 Legendary Updates
Much talk this week has been over the second legendary now that more information has come to light. While there may be much controversy over the rep requirement which hardly comes as a surprise, what does it mean for gold making?
The legendary belt that Blizzard mentioned back in November is finally on the PTR. Here's what the PTR is showing:
The belt gives the legendary class power for your current covenant, changing as you change covenants. It can be equipped with any other legendary. (You can only equip covenant power + any other legendary to get two. We already knew this.)
ilvl 265
It requires revered with The Enlightened to purchase (the Zereth Mortis broker faction).
Cost: 2,500 Cosmic Flux (currency similar to Echoes of Ny'alotha, and will be rewarded from PvP, Mythic+, world quests, etc.)
You can also buy the identical Runecarver Memory at revered for 500 Cosmic Flux, and craft the same power onto another slot.
It's not exactly a "free" legendary as many hoped, but it might be cheap, depending on how challenging it is to collect Cosmic Flux. That currency is not yet added to the PTR, as far as I can tell. Even if Cosmic Flux is easy to collect, I suspect all but the most competitive players will stick with the belt and not bother crafting it into a rank 7.
This is my quick analysis so I probably overlooked something. Of course this is the PTR, and it's subject to change.
TLDR: the belt is a high ilvl (265) and might be relatively easy to get. I suspect many non-competitive players will not find it worth the cost to put the power on a rank 7, so this new double legendary might not dramatically increase demand for base items.
Edit:
I should have noted that you'll also be able upgrade legendaries with Cosmic Flux, which will probably decrease demand for base items.
Cosmic Flux – A new currency for upgrading Runecarving legendaries, buying items off Enlightened brokers, and for using the new Creation Catalyst feature. Rewarded from a variety of activities in Shadowlands Season 3, such as defeating raid bosses, PvP, Mythic+, Torghast, Tower of the Damned, and Zereth Mortis activities.
While the reputation requirement
has been temporarily removed on the PTR
for testing purposes, the implication is that it will return for live release. There is a guide
here on Wowhead
calculating how long it will take to get Revered, about 28 days from current guesses and approximations.
Manthieus
has a video going through his thoughts on the new legendary and what the impacts are for gold making ..
as does
The Lazy Goldmaker
..
They both seem very positive that the legendary market will be invigorated with plenty of slots open to investment as new best in slot combinations are worked out. If you have the gold capital, it may well be worth investing into a few if you haven't already?
If you don't fancy the legendary market itself directly, there will be many opportunities in other side markets and/or farming materials to feed the legendary gold machines.
It does appear from a crafting alt perspective, especially armour, that you will need to grind some reputation to get further with crafting better gear to sell..
Crafter's Mark IV
will require Honored with The Enlightened as will
Tome of the Eternal.
Crafter's Mark of the First Ones
will require Revered.
Bear that in mind when getting alts ready with professions. It doesn't look like you need to finish covenant campaigns to get the quest to enter Zereth Mortis, but you will at least need to be level 60.
Beginners Guide to Gold Making
Erosium
has put together a great video here going through all the different methods of gold making with a run down of what's involved and how it works.
The different methods covered are:
Callings
World Weekly Quests
Shadowlands Mission Table
Auction House Selling
Gathering Professions
Flipping on the Auction House
Crafting Professions
Transmog Farming
Mount & Toy Farming
Raw Gold Farming
If you are interested in learning about making gold and not sure where to start, this is well worth a look and then pick something that sounds fun on the list!
Transmog Selling - Is it Worth It?
One of the above mentioned methods is Transmog Farming (running old dungeons for loot to sell on the AH that other players will buy to collect the appearance) and this was discussed in depth this week. ...
For e.g., you get a Papal Fez after a hundred Uldaman runs and you take 6 months to sell it for the 1/2 of the price or 1 month to sell it for 1/3 of the average price. Skullflame Shield was 1mil and got undercut all the way to 100k (Area-52 US) and it's been like that for months. Most greens are not selling to a point it's just better to vendor it or you'll take several mins cancelling and reauctioning it (AH throttle is annoying).
I enjoy running old dungeons, idk why but it feels kinda therapeutic, but I'm not getting the gold to pay my game time. Sorry, just venting. People say it's a slow market but it's actually worse than that.
Transmog farming is definitely not what a lot of people probably think it is. People see big tsm numbers and think their total auction value is a goldmine but really it's a trickle of sales and a lot of time managing tons of auctions just to get to that trickle of sales.
Yup, very large inventory and low sales rate are the go-to. To the point of never really paying attention to any single transmog item.
The other huge one is dbmarket and regionavgsale are often VERY different. OP mentions skullflame shield as a 1 mil getting undercut (currently 150k on A52), yet regionsaleavg is just 132k. There are a lot of inflated listings, but sales occur at much lower pricing.
The level squish has actually helped a ton, as the reduced vendor costs reduced listing fees for many items that previously were not worth the risk of just losing all potential profits from AH listing costs.
I remember watching a WTBGold video on exactly this and the real take away was that mog sells, but if you want to be making any real money off it you do so with bulk. High ticket items sell once in a blue moon. It's great when they do, but that could be months to years apart.
I have two bank toons who only sell mogs and I’ve never had to give them any more gold other then their starting gold. So no mog selling isn’t dead, it’s just contemplated. There is a lot more to selling mog then just farm x and then sell x. As other posters have said.
The first thing I always bring up is. Quantity. How many mogs do you currently have up on the ah. Most of the well known YouTubers for mogs say you should have at least 1k different mogs up on the ah to expect daily sales. And that’s a low estimate, with most saying it should be more like 1.5 to 2k. So most mog sellers who say it doesn’t sell usually don’t even have close to this amount
Next thing to consider is value. Yes value on mog can be very unobtainable but they usually say you should be close to for every 100 auctions you should have close 1 million value. Now I typically say when first building you auctions you can avoid this step in order to get a large base
Next step . You also need a large variety, meaning don’t farm the same dungeon 1000 times and post all of those up. Try different farms, different xpacs, different mobs drop different things some times
Crafted tmog is definitely something you may want to consider. Why it is super easy to hit step 1. There are loads of different items. Now yes it may take a bit of investment to get into but definitely worth it in the long run. There are multiple barriers to entry so it helps keep the gold incentive for those who embark on it. Such barriers are it’s a hefty gold investment especially if you buy the mats off the ah. There are rep gated recipes, other crafts are stuck behind daily cooldowns and so on
Lastly how often are you posting and what server are you on. High pop and/ full pop are typically the best but yes this means more competition. Do you run cancel scans or post your auctions daily If you post them for 48 hours just know you can get undercut and therefore will miss out on the sale. So running cancel scans or posting for shorter durations can combat that but yes require more work (I don’t do either I am happy with the ones I get so usually just post for 48 hours and try to post them up again when they expire )
The more work you put into you will more than likely see more results hope these help. But also know that tmog takes a long time. As others have said if you want quicker selling then you can’t beat current content gathering , you can also switch it up from time to time by doing old content gathering as well may take a bit to sell but can be worth it at times
While the criticism might be directed to YouTube videos and inflated headlines, the reality here is knowing what you are getting into and the scale of operation involved.
As mentioned above, running old dungeons can be therapeutic - you are easily powerful enough to kill everything, getting something potentially worth a lot is fun. It's an easy first step when you start to think of what to do to make gold.
Doing so with the sole purpose of earning gold is a lot less lucrative now than it used to be with vendor sell prices being what they are and you will need a lot of stock and a fair amount of luck to make reasonable money which is why I personally never recommend it.
If you want to make steady gold now, my suggestion would be to put time into maximising mission tables or working on professions or if you really want to combine.
If you would like to learn more about transmog selling, would highly recommend
watching this video by WTBGold.
