With the reveal of the Dragonflight Warlock talent trees, our Destruction Warlock writer Loozy provides initial reactions and thoughts on this revamped system. We break down the Destruction Warlock talent trees, discussing the new talents and providing some sample builds. Join us as we predict how this class could play in Dragonflight!
To learn about the best PvE talent builds in Dragonflight for this class, and export these builds into the game, please check out our Affliction, Demonology, and Destruction Warlock class guides:

Warlock Dragonflight Class Tree
Warlock Dragonflight Talents - What's New?
The Dragonflight expansion introduces a new take on the talent trees that allow for a whole new level of flexibility and customizability. Instead of picking one out of three options, you now have the control to distribute all your talent points into various different setups that customize your character for the content and playstyle you would like. These talent trees, however, are split into two different trees, one for Warlock shared between all 3 specs, and then one for each spec specifically.
Warlock Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
My first impression of the class-specific Warlock tree is that we aren't as limited in choosing one defensive option and possibly sacrificing movement in favor of that defensive option. Essentially, you're able to mix and match between numerous very high-value talents such as:
Brennender Ansturm
Dunkler Pakt
Dämonischer Zirkel
The class-specific talent tree also offers numerous talent options that empower your pet:
Zornerfüllter Diener
Dämonische Inspiration
Dämonische Seelenstärke
Grimoire der Synergie
Lehren der Schwarzen Ernte
All of these talent options encourage more focus on the pet part of playing a Warlock, which by its very nature is something Demonology is defined by, but maybe not as much Affliction and Destruction. Being able to pick up some of these powers grant more incentive to managing your pet properly and encourages you to put some thought into what pet you're using and what it's doing, rather than just summoning it and not thinking about it again.
When looking at the layout of the tree, you can go multiple different routes on the path to picking up the key powerful talent options at the bottom. These three are
Grausiges Festmahl
,
Seelenbewahrer beschwören
/
Blick des Inquisitors
and
Seelenbrand
. You will probably always going to be picking up one of the middle options, as they are the only real damage options in this talent row. But the alternatives offer both survivability and utility.
If you look at the routes you can take, we can choose to go through the left side of the tree picking up strong options such as
Dunkler Pakt
empowered by
Häufiger Spender
/
Sekret der Teufel
. This offers us such a strong on-demand cooldown on a very short cooldown. When pathing down the middle we pick up numerous of the damage increase talents mentioned above, but also the very powerful
Seelenverbindung
which essentially makes us take 10% reduced damage all of the time.
In general, this talent tree is very well constructed and allows us to go many different routes, picking up various talent points that add value to our utility, damage, and tankiness.
Destruction Warlock Spec Tree
Destruction Warlock Talents for Raiding - What's New?
The Destruction specific tree contains some new options, as well as some returning options from previous expansions. The ones worth highlighting in the talent tree are:
Avatar der Zerstörung
- The 4-set bonus from Sepulcher is making a permanent addition to the Destruction Warlock by being an option in the talent tree. The path to this talent offers various ways to empower this through
Meisterritualist
. I like this being an option, as it allows for a strong AoE spec not limited by its cooldowns, much like what we are experiencing from Destruction Warlocks in seasons 3 and 4 of Shadowlands.
Tobende Verwüstung
- A great way to add some more depth to the usage and playstyle of
Verwüstung
.
Brennpunkt
- The previously strong Azerite trait making a return to Destruction. It's worth mentioning, the reason this talent had such big value during Ny'alotha was the corruption system, allowing you to stack up haste % increase multipliers. That being said, this is still something I am happy to see making a return as it's a mechanic that rewards good gameplay.
Diabolische Glut
- A previous set bonus, turned legendary effect and now talent. I was happy to see this being an option, as it in its design makes Destruction feel more fast-paced and rewarding to play.
Wahnsinn der Azj'Aqir
- An expanded version of the previous take on this. I was happy to see this return, and especially happy to see it return with this added mechanic of also buffing spells other than just
Chaosblitz
.
Höllenbestie beschwören
- Has been the Destruction Warlock cooldown for more or less three expansions at this point, and is now no longer a part of our base-kit, but instead making an appearance as a talent.
Destruction Warlock Dragonflight Talent Tree - First Impressions
My very first impression when looking at the Destruction talent tree was how it very clearly makes you go one way or another when it comes to the type of damage you will be dealing. For that reason, I will be splitting this section up into two different categories: Single-target/cleave damage and AoE damage. It's worth noting these two examples pull heavily in their respective directions, and with this talent system, you have a whole new option to customize your own setup much more than in the past.
Single-target/Cleave
If you stick to the left side of the tree you're picking up single-target-oriented damage and ending up picking up powers as well as tools that help you with your cleave:
View in Dragonflight Talent Calculator
This setup focuses on single target, cleave, and strong cooldowns for on-demand damage through various talent points:
Seelenfeuer
- With the added bonus of
Dezimierung
allows for a hard-hitting ability that will especially be a strong damage source on raid bosses.
Höllenbestie beschwören
- Also empowered by
Hereinbrechendes Chaos
and
Chaosregen
makes for a strong cooldown.
Optionally
Schattenbrand
- With the option for also picking up
Chaosfeuersbrunst
is a very powerful talent on fights where you meet a lot of adds that die through the fight. A good example of this is the Ke'thuzad encounter in the Sanctum of Domination. When you're able to utilize this talent often, it makes for a very strong option.
Keep in mind there are many different talent choices you can flex around in this setup depending on the kind of build you need. This should however give you an idea of how the Destruction talent setup and playstyle could end up looking like in Dragonflight.
AoE damage build
If you go down the right side of the talent tree you will be looking at almost exclusively AoE-focused talent points:
View in Dragonflight Talent Calculator
This setup focuses on building and spending as many soul shards as you can, proccing
Avatar der Zerstörung
as much as you can by picking up:
Feuerregen
- The main AoE soul shard spender.
Kataklysmus
/
Inferno
- Another big AoE talent where the choice between the two depends on the situation.
Feuer und Schwefel
+
Diabolische Glut
- A solid increase to your soul shard generation.
Keep in mind, that you can change many different talents around within this setup and still be able to pick up the heavy hitters, but this should give you an idea of the structure and layout of the Destruction tree.
Destruction Warlock Dragonflight Talents for Raiding - How Strong is It?
At the current state of the development, it's very hard to judge just how strong anything is going to be when the game eventually launches. That being said, this gives us a clear indication of where Blizzard would like to see the Destruction Warlock playstyle to be. This is all subject to change and will depend on tuning, which means my final words and estimation on how strong Destruction Warlock looks to be in Dragonflight raiding should be taken with a grain of salt.
By the looks of it, we will be able to choose if we want to be a very tanky heavy hitting on either AoE or single-target/cleave, or if we want to go for slightly more utility and fit just the right damage profile your group is in need of. With every build being pushed to the alpha servers right now, it feels like more and more of the boring or flawed talents disappear, and in return, we get a talent setup that feels more exciting and fun to play. I have high hopes for this system, and at this current point, I am looking very much forward to getting into some more gameplay and see if we keep moving in this direction.
