Ever since Wrath of the Lich King, eagle-eyed players have wondered about the identity of the Stormwind Lighthouse's unmarked grave. Now, in the new book
World of Warcraft : Exploring Azeroth: The Eastern Kingdoms
, Flynn and Shaw solve this mystery while documenting the lore of the continent.
Besides the mystery interwoven through Shaw's research notes, the book provides a fun look at lore with eye-catching illustrations on every page and witty asides in the margins penned by Flynn Fairwind.
If you don't want the mystery spoiled, do not read further!

The unmarked grave is a quiet tribute to King Terenas Menethil II, the father of Calia and Arthas Menethil murdered in the Lordaeron Throne Room. The refugees of Lordaeron apparently took the crown and buried it to keep it hidden, likely to prevent Arthas from taking it and twisting the legacy of the Menethils. There are also strong hints that Thoras Trollbane, Terenas' close friend, played a large role in secretly burying the helm.
Throughout the book, there are numerous references to bloody secret crowns, which leads Flynn Fairwind to connect the dots and make an educated guess that the crown is hidden in Stormwind. Some of the clues include:
"May the bloody crown stay lost and forgotten" is the famous epitaph on Terenas' memorial, speculated in the book to have been written by Thoras Trollbane.
Thoras' own epitaph references a secretive crown, in addition to an island: "Lay down all that keeps your spirit worldly bound: your bow, your steel, your crown incarnadine. Prepare to keep the secret that was mine. Bury it, forget, and leave it lost. For others comes the light, but not for me. Tread not my path: do not an island be."
There is a special entry on the Stormwind harbor, describing the docks and gryphons. As an aside, Shaw notes that "The lighthouse on a small island nearby has sat empty for some time. The harbor has been expanded in recent years and is much safer to enter than in the past. There's a tombstone nearby, likely the resting place of a long-ago keeper, but time has faded the inscription."
If Trollbane was behind the mission to keep the location of the crown secret, that is a poignant link to Shadowlands as he's now one of the Four Horsemen working together with the former Lich King Bolvar Fordragon. And as with any detail related to Arthas, the inclusion of a Menethil in the book opens the speculation up again that Arthas will make an appearance later on in the expansion. The timing of the crown's discovery also lines up pretty well with Calia's involvement in Forsaken politics, leading to speculation that this isn't the last we'll see of the crown.
Here is the final page of
World of Warcraft : Exploring Azeroth: The Eastern Kingdoms
detailing Flynn's revelation.
One less-than-official report from the great Captain Flynn Fairwind to the devilishly handsome and capable spymaster Mathias Shaw:
I didn't think I'd be any good at this spy business. Going around the world, learning new things, exploring. All dandy at that. And yet, here I go, sorting out the saddest puzzle I've ever seen. I'm writing this down mostly so you remember for your spy-bookkeeping. I'm sure that's a thing you do anyway.
Finding all these nuggets of information got my mind spinning about buried treasure of some long dead kings. Instead...I know where the bloodied crown of King Terenas Menethil II is. You and I found it, to make sure, and buried it back as it was in that little unattended grave on the lighthouse in Stormwind Harbor. With the king of Lordaeron dead, his body destroyed, and his grave impossible to reach for mourning, the refugees of Lordaeron must have wanted a way to honor their fallen king. This was their quiet, reverent way of doing so. I've saluted many friends lost at sea, maybe they needed a place to do the same? Either way, the location stays between you and me, just like Terenas wanted. Lips sealed like a vault, cross my heart. Thank you for going back out to that island with me to check my harebrained theory...I think in doing so, we honored some folks who lost everything.
Signing off,
Captain Flynn Fairwind
xoxo
