Proudmoore Reunion Cinematic
Leading up to this cinematic, Baine takes pity on Derek Proudmoore, revived by Sylvanas Windrunner with the express purpose of being tortured and mind-controlled to return to Boralus and kill his family. In this cinematic, we see Jaina reunited with her long-lost brother, Derek Proudmoore, former commander of the legendary Third Fleet of Kul Tiras. Jaina is initial distrustful of Baine, sensing that Derek may be returned to her as a trap. She softens when Derek reveals that was Sylvanas' gruesome plan, but Baine was honorable and rescued him before he could be twisted. Baine knows the price he could pay for freeing Derek is death, but did it willingly, noting there is a sickness within the Horde.
Baine: Lady Jaina, long has it been since we spoke peacefully in Theramore.
Jaina: Theramore is gone. You did not ask me here to reminisce.
Baine: No. I have come to return one who was lost.
Jaina: Derek? My own brother...I had thought better of you Baine! Tell me, is he the Banshee's puppet? Crammed full of blight? Is he the bomb this time?
Derek: Yes...That was the plan. But...Baine took me from Sylvanas before...before...I was twisted to her will. I'm still your brother, Jaina, for as long as stars do shine.
Baine: The Horde has a sickness in it. We wage war while the Earthmother dies. We have forgotten what truly matters and my heart can bear it no longer.
Jaina: Sylvanas will kill you for this. She may not stop with you.
Baine: No life is worth living if we cannot be true to our nature. I return home to take what solace I can in my family. I hope you take solace in yours.
Jaina: Baine...Thank you.
Cinematic Analysis and Thoughts
Jaina and Baine
At the start of the cinematic, Baine and Jaina allude to their past friendship in happier times. In the past, Jaina witnessed Anduin give Baine the prized weapon Fearbreaker, and provided resources in his fight against the Grimtotems.
In the novel
Tides of War
, Baine sends a messenger to warn Jaina of Garrosh's attack on Theramore. However, this backfires as the battle at Theramore was not Garrosh's ultimate plan. By waging a war at the gates of Theramore, many Alliance leaders gathered in one place--leading to devastating damage when Garrosh dropped the mana bomb on the city.
Jaina, waiting for Baine's Horde ship to land by the ruins of Theramore, must have been experiencing flashbacks to her devastating loss and the futility of Baine's gesture. Let's hope that history doesn't repeat itself, and that Baine's heroic gesture doesn't lead to Derek, controlled by Sylvanas, attacking Jaina.
Derek and the Knife
The outcome of the cinematic possibly shows that Sylvanas has underestimated her opponents: Baine stepped up to do the honorable thing, and Jaina immediately guessed Sylvanas' plan, ready to attack both Baine and Derek. This echoes Sylvanas' plans at Teldrassil going awry, as she couldn't plan for the emotions of the living and how they would interfere with her plans.
However, Sylvanas is cunning and may have preyed upon Baine's honor to deliver Derek to Jaina in a plausible way. Jaina softens quickly when she realizes Baine's sincerity, which could be the perfect setup to leave Derek with Jaina. As we've seen in Patch 8.1 and the resurrection of Sira and Delaryn in the Night Warrior Questline, it doesn't take long for newly-raised Forsaken to fall under the control of the Banshee Queen.
The atmosphere of the cinematic is moody, with stormclouds and rain heightening the mystery. There's also a particularly ominous shot at 0:32 where we see Derek wearing a knife on his back--will he turn on Jaina? As Derek describes Sylvanas' plan at 1:23, the camera focuses again on the knife, even zooming in slightly. Was the knife placed there by Sylvanas, or is the hidden weapon meant to symbolize something ominous Derek is hiding from Jaina?
As the cinematic continues, the mood, while still tense, shifts to be slightly more optimistic that Baine did the right thing and Derek is saved. Jaina, already vigilant, certainly won't let her guard down now that she knows Sylvanas wants to kill her.
Calia and the Light-Touched Undead
The dialogue after the cinematic also portrays Derek in a sympathetic light, caring about his family and wanting to avoid Kul Tiras because of his condition. There are even hints that Jaina may introduce him to Calia Menethil, now a Light-touched Undead after the events of
Before the Storm
. If that were the case, the story could transition to one where Derek and Calia represent a new group of Undead, that do not serve Sylvanas.
Derek taken to the Netherlight Temple and examined could also verify whether or not he's operating under free will or controlled by Sylvanas.
Derek Proudmoore says: Jaina... I can hardly believe it's you. When I set sail, you were a child. And now... Lord Admiral.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: So much has changed, Derek. I... There's something I must tell you--
Derek Proudmoore says: I know about father. The Horde spewed lies to poison me against you. But Baine explained the truth of what happened.
Derek Proudmoore says: You, mother and Tandred all endured so much. I'm pleased you have each other again, but... where does my path lead?
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: I don't know. But we will find the answer together.
Derek Proudmoore says: I can't come home... can I.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: No. Not yet. But I know others who have been through this. I believe they can help you.
Derek Proudmoore says: Will you come with me, Jaina? I... I don't know if I can do this alone.
Lady Jaina Proudmoore says: Of course, Derek. No matter the storm, we will face it... as family.
Should Derek end up as another Light-touched Undead after visiting Calia at the Netherlight Temple, it would play into one of N'Zoth's new whispers from Patch 8.1.5:
The Light has struck a bargain with the enemy of all.
Earthmother as Azeroth
Baine may have confirmed that the Earthmother and Azeroth are one and the same in the quote:
We wage war while the Earthmother dies. We have forgotten what truly matters and my heart can bear it no longer.
Magni, in Battle for Azeroth, is very concerned that Azeroth is dying as well, as we also see in his
MOTHER: Visitor identified. Designation: Speaker. Presence of Speaker indicates imminent threat to Azeroth.
Magni: Exactly! We need yer help, MOTHER. Azeroth's dyin', and nothin' we do seems tae heal her.
If the Earthmother, long associated with Elune, and Azeroth are all related, the significance of the Burning of Teldrassil just gained more impact. The War of Thorns wasn't just a strategic attack on the Alliance; it was also an attack on those who worship Elune, and therefore, Azeroth. The pre-patch novellas hinted at an ulterior motive:
Elune had intervened. Perhaps she had even stayed Saurfang’s killing blow. And she wouldn’t be the only force beyond the Alliance to oppose Sylvanas’ true objective.
Sylvanas’s anger grew cold.
She had known this would happen. It had simply come sooner than expected. That was all.
"Daughter of the Sea"
At 2:08 in the cinematic, Jaina's "Daughter of the Sea" melody plays with Tauren-themed instrumentation. We first hear the "Daughter of the Sea" theme in
, as she reflects on the horrors of the Horde and feelings of guilt towards her father and nation. Her melody, playing as Baine says "No life is worth living if we cannot be true to our nature. I return home to take what solace I can in my family. I hope you take solace in yours," perhaps symbolizes Jaina's change of mind and re-evaluation of the Horde, as she realizes not all members are the enemy and she may find allies in unexpected places.
As Baine demonstrates his defiance of Sylvanas at Theramore, a location symbolizing great personal pain to Jaina, perhaps she now receives some closure from the Manabomb and subsequent feelings of betrayal. She likely won't go back to her old philosophy of peace at all costs, but Baine's actions could remind her of simpler times when the Alliance and Horde worked together to take down epic foes like C'Thun and the Lich King, as well as Baine's ongoing friendship with Anduin.
Derek also tells Jaina "I'm still your brother, Jaina, for as long as stars do shine," a reference to the lyrics in a special version of "Daughter of the Sea," sung in flashback by Daelin to child Jaina in
Die Nation Kul Tiras
Ahoy, ahoy, sweet Daughter of the Seas.
Ahoy this child be mine.
The Admiral's girl, his whole entire world,
for as long as stars do shine.
Derek uses this quote to show his sincerity to Jaina, instead of a generic line saying that he missed her. Perhaps this is also why Jaina softens--it would be unlikely for Sylvanas to program Derek to mention such an obscure personal detail from decades past.
With this cinematic, Jaina's "Daughter of the Sea" arc comes full circle. The first time we hear the melody, it reflects the bitterness of the Kul Tiras nation as she reflects on the loss of her father and walks through the ruins of Theramore. As Jaina's story progresses, we learn about more losses and disappointments in her life, and guilt over the death of her father. The story starts to turn when Katherine rescues her from Thros and Jaina saves the Kul Tiran fleet, continuing an upward arc when Jaina leads the naval attack on Dazar'alor, uniting the Kul Tirans with the Alliance. Now in this final cinematic, Jaina, the beloved Lord Admiral of Kul Tiras, is reunited with a lost family member. Daelin's verse, originally heard as part of a nightmare, is spoken by Derek as a promise for the future and pledge of loyalty.
...Let's just hope the stars reference Daelin's song, and not the "circle of stars" or the
red star of the Titans
The Story So Far
Derek died years before the events of World of Warcraft, during the Second War. Now, in Battle for Azeroth, his body was discovered by the Horde during the 8.0 War Campaign and resurrected by Sylvanas after the Battle of Dazar'alor.
Baine: What reason could you possibly have for this madness?!
Sylvanas: Derek Proudmoore was a hero to the Kul Tirans.
Sylvanas: They are sure to stage a rescue attempt when they learn of his fate.
Sylvanas: And once his mind has been properly conditioned, we will allow the Proudmoores to recover their long-lost prince...
Sylvanas: ... so he can slaughter them in their sleep.
Baine: This is too far!
Baine: How many times must we forsake our honor?
Sylvanas: There can be only victory or death for us, Baine.
Sylvanas: And death is mine to master.
Derek: What...what is this? Why am I...What have you done to me?!
Sylvanas: Why Lord Proudmoore, I've given you a chance to reunite with your family.
Sylvanas: You should be grateful.
Derek: <Derek Wailing>
Derek: Please... help me. I... I don't know what's happened. What's been done to me.
Derek: I remember the battle. Orcish dragon riders. Our decks consumed by flame. I felt a blaze of agony, and then... darkness.
Derek: I was... dead, wasn't I? For how long? I am not quite alive, and yet... I don't understand this. Please... PLEASE... how is this possible?
Derek: Where is my father? My mother? Jaina... Tandred... please... I'm so alone. Don't leave me alone...
Baine: This is wrong. There is no honor in it.
Baine: Her deeds disgrace us all. We must set things right... before the Horde loses everything that made us strong.

Alliance 8.1.5 Story
This part of the War Campaign starts with
, where it is discovered that Lady Ashvane was broken out of Tol Dagor by the Horde during their Dazar'alor War Campaign. We meet Kelsey Steelspark near Freehold, and defeat Ashvane loyalists in
Asche zu Aschenwind
, as well as find letters until we located an encrypted letter in
After obtaining an encoded letter, we kill one of Ashvane's lieutenants in
to obtain a decoder ring, where we decode the encrypted letter. In
Melde mich zum Dienst!
, we deliver the report to Jaina, mentioning that Ashvane is free and in league with the Horde.
While reporting to Jaina atop the Wind's Redemption, Shaw notices we have an extra guest, who is revealed to be the Blood Elf rogue, Valeera Sanguinar. In
Den Boten trifft keine Schuld
, Valeera delivers a message to Jaina from Baine Bloodhoof, who seeks to right a wrong done to the Proudmoore family. Valeera informs that Baine would like to meet with Jaina at the Ruins of Theramore. The request initially enrages Jaina, until it is brought up that it is the safest place to meet as Sylvanas does not have eyes there.
Jaina reluctantly accepts the request and we head to Theramore with her in
Nicht ohne meinen Bruder
. In this quest, it is revealed that Baine helped Derek Proudmoore break away from Sylvanas, and Derek is being returned to the Proudmoore family. The reunion is bittersweet, with Derek not being able to return home to Kul Tiras just yet, but Jaina mentions there is someone that might be able to help him.
Horde 8.1.5 Story
A Bluffwatcher Proudwatcher starts the questline with
, which requires you to meet with Baine Bloodhoof in Plunder Harbor. In there, Baine is talking to Valeera Sanguinar - Baine is sending Valeera to talk to Jaina Proudmoore about a meeting in Theramore.
With the help of Baine and Thomas Zelling, we take control of one of the Forsaken ships, the Swift Vengeance, in
Schiffe in der Nacht
, where Derek Proudmoore is currently imprisoned. However, Sylvanas did not trust the crew enough, so Derek's lock has three keyholes. We then recover the keys from the ship's crewmen in
Hinter Schloss und Riegel
, and kill some more crew members in
Klar Schiff machen
After taking control of the ship and freeing Derek, we then sail to Theramore in
Ein bitteres Wiedersehen
. In there, we trigger a cinematic where we meet Jaina and deliver Derek back to Kul Tiras. After the event, Baine returns to Dazar'alor to keep appearances, and Zelling comes up with a plan to help mask that fact that we stole the Swift Vengeance: try and pretend the ship fell to a failed Irontide raid, by completing the table mission
Unter falscher Flagge
and reporting our failure to Nathanos.
The second part of the questline, detailing the confrontation between Baine and Sylvanas, is time-gated behind a one day mission. While Baine is successful at returning Derek to Jaina, Sylvanas catches wind of his actions, and arrests him in front of the Horde leaders. Zelling, his accomplice, is killed by Nathanos. Earlier in the questline, Horde players have a choice to let Nathanos know that Baine requests aid for a secret mission, which impacts the dialogue later on in the quest chain.
