Do you want to be better at your class? Sure, we all do. The first step to a successful raid is to learn as much as possible about playing your class to its potential, and executing what you've learned in a clean and understanding fashion. The next step? Mind-altering and strength-modifying chemicals!
No raiding career is complete without the hundreds of hours spent farming raw materials for consumables! Right? Of course, some clever players opt to instead farm the Auction House, scoring the sweet deals and making good plays that earn them the money to supplement their raiding "habit." For everyone else though, it means knowing an
Alchemist
and getting them the herbs they need to help you! So what flasks do you need? What herbs do they take? Where is lizard help? Don't worry, Wowhead's got you covered.
I've put together a guide to help familiarize players with the new consumables available for Cataclysm content. This should serve as an informative introduction as well as a strong reference for all of your flask, elixir and potion needs! Be sure to check out the detailed guide, including run-downs of all-things liquid and contained inside a
Kristallphiole
, after the break!
Flasks
Ah, flasks. The good old fashioned raid standby. Flasks have changed a bit in Cataclysm - they no longer require a type of Lotus (such as
Teufelslotus
or
Frostlotus
), and instead require 8
Flüchtiges Leben
per craft and require more herbs. The recipes will no longer craft two flasks per set of materials as they did in Wrath of the Lich King (after flasks were changed from 2 hour to 1 hour durations). You'll only get one flask per craft (unless you're a lucky
Meister der Elixiere
), and the cost can add up pretty fast if you're not farming yourself.
Many players find it cheaper to buy the flasks directly instead of the raw materials, as they are a common option for leveling up
Alchemie
and herb prices can be rather high. This will, of course, depend on your server's economy.

Fläschchen des fließenden Wassers
provides 300 Spirit for one hour. Mana regen flasks haven't really been popular over the past few years, with many raiders in Wrath of the Lich King opting to use
Fläschchen des Frostwyrms
or even
Fläschchen der destillierten Weisheit
once regen was trivialized by progression. Despite the mana issues some healers are suffering as they adapt to raiding with their classes in Cataclysm, regen flasks still don't seem to be a very popular option, as the benefits granted by Intellect (such as mana regen, crit, and spell power) make
Fläschchen der drakonischen Gedanken
substantially stronger for most every class.

Kristallphiole
Fläschchen der drakonischen Gedanken
provides 300 Intellect for one hour. There's no spell power flask in Cataclysm, so this is the flask of choice for most every caster (unless you're interested in
Fläschchen des fließenden Wassers
for whatever reason). With nearly every caster class having talents that will benefit from having more Intellect, it is easily the most valuable stat and use of this flask is unquestionable. More spellpower, bigger mana pool, more crit, even mana regen - I'd like to see your pansy
Fläschchen des fließenden Wassers
do all that!

Fläschchen der Stahlhaut
provides 300 Stamina for one hour. This is the token tanking flask of Cataclysm, which provides a Stamina boost instead of the static health boost provided by Wrath of the Lich King's
Fläschchen des Steinbluts
. This is a welcome change, as it means that different classes of tanks will receive variable bonuses from the flask. Unfortunately, most players are complaining that the flask is underbudgeted in comparison to the other +300 flasks, as Stamina typically "costs" less (such as on an item) and the flask should have 50% more Stamina to be properly equivalent (compare
Gediegener Ozeansaphir
to
Klobiger Infernorubin
). Maybe Blizzard will realize this, since our tanks have well over 150k health an extra 4-5k isn't really that gamebreaking.

Kristallphiole
Fläschchen der Titanenstärke
provides 300 Strength for one hour. Not much to say about it; Strength is
awesome
, and this flask provides a ton of it. No more attack power flask this time around - just the sweet, sweet taste of more power. Obviously, this flask is best suited to the plate-wearing melee DPS including death knights, retribution paladins and warriors. Strength, ungh! Some tanks may opt to use this flask as well for additional damage / threat generation, but
Fläschchen der Stahlhaut
is generally the more accepted choice.

Fläschchen der Winde
provides 300 Agility for one hour. Like I mentioned before, there's no upgraded version of
Fläschchen der endlosen Wut
in Cataclysm so this is
the
choice for all the hunters, rogues and cat druids out there. And it's a good choice.
Guild Cauldrons
Cataclysm added an unique alternative to regular flasks: cauldrons! Previous cauldrons were only used to provide temporary elemental protection potions (such as
Kessel des erheblichen Feuerschutzes
). Cataclysm's cauldrons are entirely different - instead of providing situational potions, they instead provide flasks! Guilds with talented Alchemists can now use
Schlachtzugskessel
or
Großer Schlachtzugskessel
to provide members in their raid group with a
Fläschchen des Schlachtzugs
.
Schlachtzugskessel
will provide 7 flasks before being fully consumed, and
Großer Schlachtzugskessel
can provide 20 flasks total. Unfortunately, this means some players will still be on their own! Eventually, when guilds are finally able to reach
(at guild level 20), these cauldrons will then provide 10 and 30 flasks, respectively.
Fläschchen des Schlachtzugs
will automatically select a buff based on the consumer's class and talents. Guild flasks are temporary, soulbound, and must be consumed within 15 minutes. These flasks will provide a static +300 to a single stat (
identical
to the buffs provided by normal flasks).
It's worth mentioning that guild cauldrons are basically pretty awesome as they provide the only flasks affected by the
guild perk. The first rank of the perk is obtained at guild level 10, and the second rank (
) will finally unlock at guild level 22, causing all guild flasks to last 2 hours. Alchemists will be happy to know that these flasks are also affected by their
Mixologie
skill.
In order to unlock the recipes to create guild cauldrons, the guild must first complete following guild achievements:
Mischmeister
- Requires your guild to craft 1,000 Cataclysm flasks, awards
Rezept: Schlachtzugskessel
Mehr Erfolg durch Chemie
- Requires your guild to craft 3,000 Cataclysm flasks, awards
Rezept: Großer Schlachtzugskessel
Thankfully, guilds can opt to use some of the many flasks crafted to create the cauldrons once a recipe has been unlocked, as they simply require a number of existing flasks (and
Todesblutgift
for
Schlachtzugskessel
)!

Potions
Potions just don't get much love as they used to. Back in my day, we used to chug potions like we had a drinking problem and we liked it! Now, players are limited to using only one potion during a phase of combat, so they're typically used for those "make it count" moments to maximize DPS output or by pro healers like me who hit
Trank der Konzentration
then immediately have to start running from something about to kill me . Thankfully, Cataclysm brought a fair supply of upgraded potions!
Temporary 'Boost' Potions
Irdener Trank
- +4800 armor for 25 seconds
Vulkanischer Trank
- +1200 spell power for 25 seconds
Trank der Tol'vir
- +1200 Agility for 25 seconds
Trank aus Golemblut
- +1200 Strength for 25 seconds
As usual, there's an upgraded batch of health and mana potions, including two interesting new variations on old potions:
Trank der Konzentration
and
Mysteriöser Trank
.
Trank der Konzentration
work similar to the old
Erheblicher Trank des traumlosen Schlafs
, except the effect can now be cancelled by moving. If coordinated properly with other healers, these potions are extremely valuable as they can restore a boatload of mana and are relatively easy to make.
Mysteriöser Trank
are the odd duck of Cataclysm potions, a strangely modified
Wildrankentrank
with an effect that scales based on Alchemy skill (though, unlike Wrath of the Lich King's
Trank des wahnsinnigen Alchemisten
these do not
require
Alchemy to consume). Wowhead user Kaziel has posted
the most elaborate testing and explanation
of the potion's effects.
It's also worth mentioning that Blizzard doesn't like us anymore and unlike in every prior expansion, health and mana potions will
not
drop from creatures in the world (unless you get lucky with a
Versiegelte Kiste
). Alchemists, fire up your lasers.

Elixirs
Poor elixirs. Back in the day, you were basically a pro if you rocked your class' most optimal guardian / battle elixir combination - telling the world, "Hey, I don't care if I lose these buffs when I die, because you know what? I don't plan to die." Unfortunately, with the drastic changes brought by the Cataclysm, the secondary stats typically just aren't as amazingly awesome as the primary stats, and the lack of quality guardian elixirs makes using a single battle elixir's effect fairly lackluster compared to the big n' beefy flasks. Most players will probably only consider using elixirs either compromise for a missing secondary stat cap, or to couple with
Prismatisches Elixier
for fights with significant elemental raid damage.
Battle Elixirs
Elixier der unmöglichen Präzision
- +225 hit rating for 1 hour
Elixier der mächtigen Geschwindigkeit
- +225 haste rating for 1 hour
Elixier der Kobra
- +225 critical strike rating for 1 hour
Elixier der Meisterschaft
- +225 mastery rating for 1 hour
Elixier der Naga
- +225 expertise rating for 1 hour
Geisterelixier
- +225 Spirit for 1 hour
Guardian Elixirs
Elixier der tiefen Erde
- +900 armor for 1 hour
Prismatisches Elixier
- +90 magic resistance for 1 hour
Where to Get Materials?
Every Cataclysm flask requires 8
Flüchtiges Leben
and 8 each of two different kinds of herbs. Blizzard has finally done away with the various types of vials, and all flasks (along with everything else) now require
Kristallphiole
, which have had their price substantially lowered. Getting the materials will be a bit of a pain for players without
Kräuterkunde
, as there is really not a reliable source for farming
Flüchtiges Leben
outside of collecting it from herb nodes. And of course, you're not going to get herbs without
Kräuterkunde
unless you're ready to pay!
It's worth mentioning that leveling
Kräuterkunde
is substantially easier in Cataclysm, as the node spawns in Azeroth seem to have been boosted greatly and you can start on Cataclysm herbs relatively early (introductory nodes start at a 425 skill requirement). Not only that, but being able to fly in Azeroth (if your level permits it) makes old world skill leveling a breeze, and you'll even get experience from it! The higher level nodes actually offer a substantial bit of exp; my death knight leveled 80 - 84 solely with
Kräuterkunde
and
Bergbau
with some elemental farming in between. She may not have any gear or reputation, but man can she pick some flowers!
Cataclysm Herbs
Aschenblüte
Gathered from
Aschenblüte
Aschenblüte
is the introductory herb of Cataclysm and can be found in pretty much every zone, mostly in hot and fiery locations like areas with lava and scorched earth in zones such as
Hyjal
and
Tiefenheim
. I've also had substantial luck in finding quite a bit in
Schattenhochland
as well.
Sturmwinde
Gathered from
Sturmwinde
Sturmwinde
can be found throughout
Hyjal
and all three of the
Vashj'ir
zones (
Abyssische Tiefen
,
Tang'tharwald
and
Schimmernde Weiten
). You'll probably have the best luck in
Vashj'ir
as
Hyjal
is more commonly trafficked because everyone knows flying > swimming, even with an
Vashj'ir-Seepferdchen
.
Azsharas Schleier
Gathered from
Azsharas Schleier
Azsharas Schleier
is almost exclusive to the underwater
Vashj'ir
zones (
Abyssische Tiefen
,
Tang'tharwald
and
Schimmernde Weiten
), though an extreme few spawns can be found near bodies of water in
Hyjal
.
Herzblüte
Gathered from
Herzblüte
Herzblüte
is found in
Tiefenheim
. Period.
Gertenrohr
Gathered from
Gertenrohr
Gertenrohr
can be the biggest pain in the butt herb to farm. It only spawns in two zones, and in specific locations in both zones. It can be found along the river that runs through the center of
Uldum
, and the marshland area outside of Baradin Hold in
Tol Barad
. Unfortunately, because these nodes have such static farming paths and locations, they may be heavily trafficked on your server, making this herb more difficult to obtain in significant quantity.
Gertenrohr
is used not only for crafting Strength and Agility flasks, but for
Mythischer Manatrank
as well.
Schattenjasmin
Gathered from
Schattenjasmin
Schattenjasmin
can be found in (you guessed it)
Schattenhochland
. While spawns are not as plentiful as they were at Cataclysm launch, there's still a decent amount of nodes at any given time unless the zone is being heavily farmed. There's not any specific area in the zone to farm, though I've had significantly better luck in areas north of the Crucible of Carnage.
