Shadowlands Tortured Souls of Torghast (Character Speculation)
18.04.2020 um 21:15
Torghast, Tower of the Damned is the new feature currently being tested in the Shadowlands Alpha, a dungeon where we ascend from level to level getting more powerful as we defeat the forces of the Jailer. In
Towelliee's interview with Senior Designer Paul Kubit
, it has been stated that Torghast is where the Jailer keeps his most precious souls, and we will see some important characters in there. In this post, we go over the possibilities and characters that have been found in Torghast in some capacity.

Tortured Souls in Torghast
Tortured Souls are a common sight in Torghast - Once you free them, they will give the last of their strength for you in the form of
, a currency used for your Covenants, and the buff
Segen des Seelenrückstands
, which increases your primary stat by 1% per soul you save in Torghast. You do not see these souls again, and they take the forms of many Azeroth races.
It is currently unknown when we would see important characters in Torghast, but we might have our answers in a confirmed appearance - In a visit to Torghast, one floor had some well known characters:
Derek and Tandred can be seen in the front, both in chains, with Jaina behind them, constantly weeping. If you interact with the vases behind Jaina (a common action in Torghast, as they usually grant
, a currency to purchase certain powers in there), Derek and Tandred are unceremoniously killed, and Jaina cries a last time before disappearing.
A notable thing about these models is that Derek is not using his Undead model, but instead his Human model. Another thing of notice is that when the vases are interacted with, Jaina doesn't die while her brothers do. This could be a clue to the fact that Jaina may be one of the more powerful souls that found their way to Torghast, and seeing her brothers chained and then dead might be one of the many forms of torture by the Jailer.
However, we do not know for a fact that Jaina is dead or alive,
as we ourselves enter the Shadowlands while still alive
. According to the
WoW: What's Next Panel at BlizzCon 2019
, we first emerge into The Maw when entering the Shadowlands, but we manage to do what no other being has ever done - Escape it. With this, it is probably safe to assume that Jaina was part of the entourage that made their way to the Shadowlands with us, and could not escape The Maw. As Jaina is considered the most powerful sorceress alive in Azeroth, it would make sense that the Jailer would throw her straight into Torghast.
Possible NPCs in Torghast
There are other datamined NPCs that share IDs close to those of Jaina, Tandred and Derek, so they might be seen in Torghast in the future. They would all fit the criteria for powerful beings.
WARNING: The list of characters below is not confirmed to appear in Torghast and purely speculative!
: The King of Gilneas does not deter from fighting in the frontlines, and is a likely candidate to have gone to the Shadowlands with the player entourage and suffer the same theoretical fate as Jaina.
: Nathanos was the only being that Sylvanas ever shown any sort of affection after her death. However, after bringing so many souls to the Jailer, he might no longer be useful to Sylvanas and just left in Torghast. Nathanos was also discovered to be
tagged as a boss in early datamining
, which could make the Champion of the Banshee Queen a boss on later floors in Torghast.
: This NPC is using the Arthas model, not the Bolvar model. Arthas is someone many players are expecting to meet again in Shadowlands, and we could not possibly have a better candidate to see in Torghast. However, this NPC has a title, <Vision of Surrender>, which likely means this is a flashback.
: Thrall could be in a similar predicament as Greymane, finally returning to the frontlines after being absent for the duration of Legion and most of Battle for Azeroth.
: Garrosh is also a prime candidate for The Maw due to the atrocities he committed in life. As a former Warchief of the Horde and one of the most powerful warriors of recent age, seeing him in Torghast would not be too much of a stretch.
: Ysera died very recently at the beginning of Legion, and probably was unfortunate enough to be sent to The Maw with the rest of the funneled souls instead of the likely destination of Ardenweald.
Of course there aren't that many characters on the list above, but these are only characters datamined during Shadowlands with no known location in-game. Which memorable characters do you think we will see in Torghast? Let us know your opinions in the comments!
