Nobbel explains the lore behind the Shadowlands raid Castle Nathria, continuing the story of Revendreth. Check out his video and related guides in this article!
Revendreth: The Story So Far...
To best understand the story of Castle Nathria, you need to know the story of Revendreth. The details of this zone should be fresh in players' minds, as it is the final zone you must quest through before choosing a covenant. While we start the zone by aiding Denathrius, we realize about halfway through that his purpose is corrupt--and so we swap to aiding the rebels instead.
The zone culminates in a grand reveal: Sire Denathrius shows Prince Renathal, the first Venthyr he created, the massive hoard of anima funneling into the Maw. After such a shattering realization, the player chooses a covenant to help set things right and build up the forces of the Shadowlands. Several weeks into our Covenant content, the Castle Nathria raid opened up. Now we take the fight directly to Denathrius, unseating him from power and reclaiming some of the lost anima.
Story and Quests of Revendreth
Castle Nathria Bosses
Castle Nathria is a 10 boss raid set in Denathrius' lavish stronghold. The first eight Nathria bosses have the following item level loot: 187 LFR, 200 Normal, 213 Heroic, 226 Mythic. Stone Legion Generals and Sire Denathrius, the two final bosses of the raid, have slightly better loot item levels: 194 LFR, 207 Normal, 220 Heroic, 233 Mythic. In addition, some bosses drop legendary powers which have a 100% droprate.

There are some fun items from Nathria bosses including
Knaufjuwel von Remornia
from Denathrius. The transmog from Nathria is distinctive as well: the bosses drop
which are turned in for covenant-specific appearances, while the
have a vampire aesthetic.

Below we have strategy guides to all ten bosses:
The Leeching Vaults
Lady Inerva Darkvein
Reliquary of Opulence
Sun King's Salvation
Council of Blood

Stone Legion Generals
An Audience with Arrogance
Many of the bosses are familiar faces to Revendreth, like Lady Inerva Darkvein, but one stands out from Azeroth's past: Kael'thas Sunstrider.
The Burning Crusade
, players faced Kael'thas twice as a villain--first as the final boss of
Festung der Stürme
and then as the final boss of
Terrasse der Magister
. But Kael'thas wasn't always a villain, as we see in the
Blood Elf Heritage Armor Questline
, which depicts the fall of Quel'Thalas and destruction of the Sunwell. Much of Kael'thas' compelling character arc happened out-of-game before the launch of
World of Warcraft
, so his reappearance in
provides an opportunity to delve into his past and add complexity to his in-game portrayal, similar to Jaina's treatment in
Battle for Azeroth
Players that select the Venthyr Covenant will learn more about Kael'thas, as his story continues beyond the raid.
Venthyr Covenant Campaign
Nobbel explains Kael's story a bit more in the video:
Even though the Afterlives short showed us the torment of Garrosh Hellscream, right here we’re dealing with none other than Kael’thas Sunstrider. As far as I know,Ggarrosh hasn’t been spotted yet, but to run into the Prince of the Blood Elves is awesome all the same.
In life Kael’thas lead his people through the most dire of times. They were still High Elves back then, enjoying the good magics of the Sunwell but that all changed when the Scourge nation attacked. Arthas Menethil, now an agent of the Lich King with Frostmourne in hand (which we now know is connected to the Jailer), was on a mission to bring back Kel’thuzad as a Lich. To do that, they were going to need the powers of the Sunwell. Despite their best efforts and many brave heroes giving up their lives, like Sylvanas Windrunner and King Anasterian Sunstrider, none were able to defend the high home of the elves.
Kel’thuzad was brought back, corrupting their ancient font of power, the Sunwell. Kael’thas had no choice but to destroy it, revealing the addiction of the elves that had formed over generations. Not only that, there was also the problem of the Undead Scourge left behind in their lands. While the prince tried to work together with the Alliance at first, Grand Marshal Garithos made that quite hard by giving him near-impossible tasks. Even pushed it so far as to place Kael’thas in the Dalaran prison to await their execution. (Fitting that the High Torturer in Castle Nathria is called Darithos, I wonder if there’s a connection or if they just wanted to give a little hint.)
Either way, with promises of salvation for his people, not to mention avoiding the executioner, the prince eventually teamed up with Illidan Stormrage and Lady Vashj but that salvation never came. Illidan kept his secrets close and Kael’thas was lured to the dark side. Now allied with Kil’jaeden the Deceiver and quite addicted to fel magic, he turned against his own people and tried to summon Kil’jaeden into the world... until we put a stop to him. We sent him off to the Shadowlands where he was deemed worthy for Revendreth.
Normally Revendreth would help him try to atone for his sins in life, but not in Castle Nathria. Not under the Master's leadership, Instead they amplified them, adding the sins of others to the prideful prince’s soul while his pain and hatred are channeled to make him a powerful weapon. This has imperiled his soul like no other and it must be saved – if only to keep it from being unleashed upon the Shadowlands.
We continue to fight our way through the castle, encountering more familiar faces like the Stone Legion Generals from Revendreth questing. Finally we reach Sire Denathrius, alongside the sentient blade Remornia, as the final encounter of Castle Nathria.
Look Remornia! These daring mortals have persevered through every obstacle put before them, It seems we have little choice left but to surrender.
I have a better idea, Master! Let me carve them up instead!
Hmm, now there’s a thought. We could slay these petulant, small-minded creatures and use their bones to pave the path for our ascension .What to do, what to do...
Pleaaaaaaaaaaase master! It’s been so long since I cut into living flesh! Let me skewer them! Slice them! Slash them! Vivisect them! Cut ribbons from their –
Pace yourself, Remornia. Rushing one’s work is so...unflattering. I shall assist our guests with their atonement. Once they have repented, I will permit you to rend their bodies and send their souls screaming into the Maw!
Upon his defeat, Remornia saves Denathrius, binding his essence inside the sword:
Remornia: This is not the end, Master! Let me preserve you!
Draven: The blade has drawn in his essence!
Remornia: Zovaal shall restore you, Master! We will have vengeance!
Prince Renathal: No. Denathrius will answer for his betrayal.
Remornia: Treacherous Prince! I will skewer you! Slice you! Slash you! Vivisect you! Cut ribbons from your--
Prince Renathal: We've all heard quite enough from you!
Draven: If that sword truly holds the Sire's essence, I fear your spells alone cannot keep his power contained.
Prince Renathal: True. But I know something that can. We will bring the blade to Sinfall. The naaru that the mortals rescued, Z'rali, has pledged to aid our cause.
Prince Renathal: For too long, Denathrius used the Light as a weapon against our people in the Ember Ward. Now, it will be used to bind him.
Draven: A fitting fate for one so prideful. He will watch helplessly as we restore Revendreth and thwart the Jailer's schemes.
Prince Renathal: Yes, my friend. Together with these mortals we will claim victory.
We deliver this blade to General Draven and Z'rali in
Erlösung für den Erlöser
Denathrius once served a noble cause. His charismatic leadership and understanding of the dark desires were instrumental in the redemption of more souls than your world has known.
Perhaps in time, he could be this again, if the right lessons were to remind him of his true purpose.
Castle Nathria Cinematic
Turning in this quest triggers a special in-game cinematic! Here, the essence of Sire Denathrius, trapped in Remornia, is bound and tortured by the power of Light.
Prince Renathal: You were ever fond of saying that the venthyr do not destroy. We educate.
Prince Renathal: It is time you were reminded of Revendreth's noble purpose.
Z'rali: Shall we begin?
Sire Denathrius: You cannot bind me here!
Sire Denathrius: I am eternal!
Sire Denathrius: I am your MASTER!
Sire Denathrius: I... AM... REVENDRETH!
Prince Renathal: Remember this lesson.
Prince Renathal hopes that Denathrius has learned his lesson, a throwback to the Revendreth quest cinematic where Denathrius bested Renathal and revealed his hoard of anima. While it's a bit optimistic considering the gravity of Denathrius' actions, keep in mind that Renathal was the first Venthyr created by Denathrius, and they have a bit of a father/son dynamic.
And if you're wondering who Z'rali is, she is a Naaru with an unlikely home in the Shadowlands. Originally battling Denathrius' unnatural use of the Light in Revendreth, she was captured by the unseen ones and taken to Sanguine Depths until her rescue by the Venthyr Covenant. Now she resides in Dawnkeep, the part of Revendreth most filled with Light, too changed to return back to Azeroth.
As a result of her treatment at the hands of Denathrius, Z'rali too finds poetic justice against Sire Denathrius in this cinematic, imprisoning him just like he did to her. However, we've seen in the case of
that justice and vengeance can be easily mixed up, so let's hope that this plan doesn't backfire for Renathal and Z'rali too. The Naaru and the Light can be capable of zealotry, as we've seen in the Mag'har Orc recruitment scenario and Xe'ra during Shadows of Argus.
Home. It calls to me, mortal. And yet, I will never know its warmth again.
My kind would not perceive me as I was. They would see only an aberration. Fractured. Tainted by the touch of this realm's dark Master.
Now there is but one path before me. To ensure the Light is felt here. That justice is rendered. And that Death is made to know its place.
So here I remain. Bound by duty. Until my last flicker fades away.
Why are you in the Shadowlands?
We came seeking justice. Retribution. To answer an affront committed upon the Light itself.
Our numbers were vast. Uncountable. Every heart burning with righteous fury.
Many fell. But not before we unleashed a fire that our enemies could not endure. The seething scar of our vengeance still lingers in the firmament.
I lay broken on the battlefield. Until the unseen ones found me. Preserved me. To serve as a vessel for their Sire's rage.
But I endured. I knew the Light had a destiny. For me. And for your kind as well, mortal.
The ending of Castle Nathria is pretty different from what we've come to expect from other first-expansion raids. We get a cutscene, some narrative development, and the final boss of the raid survives--all things that point to the continuation of the story in a future patch.
Here's Nobbel's take on the ending and some questions he has about the story:
And so the Sinfall Rebellion has prevailed. Castle Nathria has been conquered. It leaves us with the Sire trapped in his blade meaning that he’s not completely gone. At first glance I thought that this would mean that we’re going to restore this Pantheon of Death, the ones responsible for imprisoning the Jailer. That’s what the Primus told us to do after all, but then Renethal thinks that it will take a bit of time, time the likes of which our kind has yet to measure. But in that time, perhaps Denathrius will step forth from this pinnacle, his true purpose once again affirmed. Or darker forces might be able to get their hands on the blade in the future, making him a threat once more.
Time will tell how that’s going to play out. For now you’re up to speed on the story that goes down in the first raid of the Shadowlands. It leaves us with the spirit of Kael’thas Sunstrider in need of some fixing after what they did to him in the castle, let alone the sins that landed him here in the first place. And questions like...was Sire Denathrius responsible for what happened to the Arbiter? What changed him so much? What did the Jailer tell him that made him swap sides? Was it truly just the promise of the power of death conquering all the other forces in the universe?
We’re all still kind of hoping that there’s more to the Jailer and his motivations then just an evil force that wants to break out and destroy it all. Can’t wait to get more details, more of the mysteries from the Shadowlands revealed...not to mention perhaps the biggest question of all... Where in the world is Garrosh Hellscream?
