The Ethics of Baiting
An interesting topic came up this week started by
with a thread
Got my Bruto Mount!! Most unethical way ever!
So...most of you are going to think I'm an ***** for doing this but hey..not my fault people can't use their eyes..
I started making my first million gold with Alchemy and Silas procs etc and made a decent amount, but as you know as the expansion draws closer to an end..so does the profits slow.
I did this by mistake actually, I posted an Tidespray Linen at 99s instead of 2g99s...don't ask how i did it but i did lol..so i went back like 10 minutes later to check and noticed that someone i guess didn't pay attention and posted 10k TS Linen at 98s to undercut me. I immediately bought out all of that and easily almost tripled my gold that I just spent on it..I felt guilty but hey free 29k is free 29k.
So, that's how it started for me to post at like 20% price and have people not "pay attention" and post under my already extremely undercut prices so I can snatch up their stuff and make a killing.
To date, my biggest score was Anchor Weed, sells for 60g on my realm, I put 1 up for 15g and someone posted 4500 at 14g99s giving me a profit of roughly 250k after AH cuts. My main markets doing this are potions/flasks and food on raid days (tues/thurs/fri/sat) which people just spam undercut eachother and don't really pay attention and I can swoop in and make a quick 200k per night in like 20 minutes of doing this.
Sure i'll lose a bit if someone catches me doing this but it's more than worth it when you get that score.
Sorry to anyone I've caused losses to :(
This method is well known and normally called "baiting", a technique to tempt people to post at the lower price. Quite often this will happen accidentally when users of TSM and other addons have a wide price range or will simply be someone posting at the lowest price regardless. This therein lies the discussion of ethics... Are you profiting from someones mistake or is it a matter of working the market?
talks about how they reacted to their own encounters of baiting ..
I have such mixed emotions about your post.
A little while after 8.3 came, I had farmed up all the mats and crafted a whole lot of K'babs, which were selling really well and at a high price. I had just recently gotten started with proper goldmaking and had not learned how to set up my TSM fully, just super enjoying the quick posting and everything, you know. So, I happily posted all my cooked and crafted items, not paying much attention to any item in particular - and man, the surprise I had when I checked my mail later. I had fallen for a trick like yours, and someone bought all my K'babs for 49s each. Still makes me feel so bad to think about the huge loss and time wasted.
The thing is though, I blame myself, because I should have paid attention. Now, whenever I notice this kind of shenanigans, I just buy the one troll item, hoping to save someone else from falling for the trap. I honestly think it's a sneaky and weird thing to do, and though I understand the motivation of quick money I don't think I would feel right about doing it. But people are different, and I guess some would find the same satisfaction from that behaviour that I find in my regular goldmaking.
Your tactics may be strange to me, but at the same time I respect your effort and planning, and wish you well with your new longboi companion :)
The general consensus seems to be in general that the tactic is valid and it's up to the user to check their prices before posting. The standard auction house UI will automatically set the posting price at the lowest value. The decision process after that is up to the user as they can clearly see the range of prices on offer.
Have you ever accidentally posted at a low price? Have you ever intentionally matched the lowest for a sale no matter and don't mind - a sale is a sale, right? Would you use such a tactic to deliberately catch some following your lead in price?
How to Setup WorthIt
has been hard at work expanding on the farming addon
and has released a great video to go alongside the new features and how to set it up ...
It's great to see addons like this getting continuous development and if you are stuck for ideas for what to farm, this is a great addon to use.
Latest Updates from TSM 4.10 Alpha
The ongoing development of TSM 4.10 Alpha has seen some fantastic updates and quality of life changes. We reported on the new release
and went through the initial
Since then, there have been some tweaks to the different options for appearances ...
The mailing interface now has flipped the default pressing of SHIFT to continue opening mail after reload to us SHIFT to turn this off and pressing CTRL also changes the text to show how all mail except the gold will be opened along with a tooltip explaining the use ...
and now when you hover over your gold amount in the top right corner, you get a detailed breakdown of gold across all characters ..
All in all, it's really coming together and a big thanks to the TSM team for working so diligently on all the changes. If you want to see more TSM Alpha, I will be going through using it during the livestream of this blog.
Complete Newcomers Approach to Gold Making
openly admits he has never really bothered with gold making, and in this video he talks about his approach and plans for making gold for the Brutosaur ...
The main idea for his approach is to make use of the
site and follow a lot of the ideas listed there for farming as well as follow advice from
in order to expand his gold making knowledge. This is a fine start and although the daily amount of gold does seem daunting, it is acheivable.
That said, many have come to a similar realisation as to how daunting this task actually is at this stage of the game as
So, using the Brutosaur calculator, and going for the default date of "1 October". I see that I have to gather just short of 40k each day up until 1 October.
So far I've been farming mats, and I've tried out the "super tidespray linen bracer shuffle".
Any form of gathering gold so far has not even come close to reaching 40k/day.
I'm currently sitting around 8k profit per day (4hrs of play). With these numbers, I should just be doing WQ's and it would go even faster...
So, I'm making this post to help some other people that are only now jumping to the idea that they want to start farming the gold and haven't had the realisation that 5 million gold is not just a big number, it's a ridiculous number.
But also trying to share what I've learned:
Seems like there are only 3 ways to reach this gold if you are starting out on nearly nothing.
Make profit flipping things
A combination of these 3 things is most likely how you're getting there.
Remember that farming it will need you to reach the "x thousand gold per day" requirement.
So what's left if 4hrs a day isn't a realistic option for you?
Buying tokens, which isn't really a way to "make gold" it's just bypassing everything and failing.
Flipping on the AH is where you're going to be untethered by a max amount of gold per hour.
Like I said, I'm only new myself and I made this post to help other new people save some time researching and building up to a farming method only to THEN realize that they have to commit to that farm for 2-6 hours EACH DAY for 3+ months.
I'd say, get yourself some money farming gold, and turn towards flipping large amounts or you will not make 5 million gold without buying tokens unless you're willing to nolife it.
Please someone tell me I'm wrong and there's a better way? Because flipping is not a guaranteed success.
For many at this stage of the game, it will be a case of weighing up how much you really want the mount vs. what resources you have at your disposal with regards to time and knowledge. There may be many reasons as to why you are starting late and maybe only just got back into the game. Remember, the mount is not going away, it will be available in the Black Market Auction House, we just don't know what kind of prices it will see.
Also, don't forget to have fun, if the whole challenge is not enjoyable, then please do consider moving onto something more fulfilling. This was echoed by
u/OverKast78 on setting a different goal instead
I’m sitting at 1 mil and don’t have the time or the knack for making gold, however I’m still setting reachable goals first.
If you’re in the same boat, first aim for enough to purchase the expansion.
Then enough for 6 months sub.
After that alts with some spending money for leveling up professions.
Or whichever goal u want, just don’t burn out going after the bruto and not enjoying the game anymore.
If you are still determined to get your brutosaur, then
has an updated video going through many gold making methods in detail ...
