Wowhead's Artist's Corner and Giveaway - DCMJS
21.01.2018 um 17:04
Welcome to the latest installment of Wowhead's
! Here at Wowhead we love art - drawing, painting, sculpting, woodworking, metalworking, jewelry making, papercrafting, badge making, everything under the sun.
In an effort to share what our wonderful community does, every month we will feature an artist and their craft. This article will feature a small description about themselves so that you can get to know them just a bit, show off their art, and learn more about what they do. And of course, there will be a special giveaway for one of their items.
This month we will be featuring:
We spoke with DCMJS and asked him to tell us a little about himself.
Hey my name is Matt — aka DCMJS (dc is my hood, mjs is my name) — I’m also /u/nykana on reddit. I’m a creative director and web/ux/ui designer based on the east coast. In my spare time I design fun art.
I started playing WoW during WotLK after my brother showed me the Leeroy Jenkins video on YouTube. Since then I've lived vicariously through my Holy Paladin, and eventually my Mistweaver Monk when MoP came around. I absolutely love the taxonomy of the classes and specs. There's something so organizationally satisfying about everyone having their own role, kind of like the Power Rangers or the Avengers. I love to casually raid (a bit tricky now with 2 young kids) and would like to give a shout out to The Instance podcast crew, who I listen to religiously and have met twice now at BlizzCon.
Like a lot of my peers, I grew up in an era where playing video games, collecting action figures, and running DnD campaigns were not things that the cool kids did. That all changed rapidly as my generation grew older. Now we have massive brands like WoW, Star Wars, and Marvel which target people just like us (and make a ton of money from it). Even though it’s now en vogue to be a sci-fi/comic/fantasy/game fan, I still wasn’t happy with the styles of art being used for posters or apparel. It’s not really my thing to wear a shirt with an airbrushed (albeit, beautiful) high-fantasy character on it. I’m more into minimalist, subtle, clean lines and clever meanings.
My art focuses on trying to transform the games and genres we love into modern/chic posters and apparel. I like making designs that have hidden meanings, where you only get the visual reference if you’re a fan. I like twisting the typical fantasy aesthetic and deconstructing it into the simplest shapes possible.
