People here are making a complicated story out to be simple. Its not just that CLEARLYSylvanas created the plague, and than allowed Putris to use it, and Varimathras to rebel so she could use them as scapegoats. I can easily imagine the WC3 Sylvanas to have knowledge about the Wrathgate attack and the Under City Rebellion and choose not to stop them JUST TO get a shot at Arthas. The blight clearly hurt the LK and had a chance to kill him. All she had to sacrifice was horde soldiers. And as a bonus some Alliance also died. Shure you can argue that the casualties at Wrathgate hurt the overal campaigne against ICC, but wounding Arthas could have helped just as much.Regarding the Eurogamer quote. Afrasiabi was talking about a lot of things. "the Wrathgate and the Blight and the Forsaken... Those were all under Sylvanas's orders". So he could have just mixed up. But it was all Syvanas's design, if not her direct orders.
Look I haven't read the comments. and I don't care too so this may have already been said, BUT.This doesn't address my problem with their Sylvanas writing at all.To me, her going off the rails has never had anything to do with her morality. I understand and know she has always done evil stuff. That is not my issue. My problem is that, where she use to be cold and calculating, she is know emotional and rash.THAT is why they are failing Sylvanas in their writing, not making her do evil. She has always done evil acts. This article does not address what I feel is the real issue with her in this expansion. Now sure, she might be playing the long game, perhaps they'll have it all be part of some master plan. I'm going to play to find out. But this expansion has royally irked me from a storytelling perspective. P.S. Saurfang should not be Warchief. He is a traitor and weak willed.BAINE BLOODHOOF FOR WARCHIEF!
well dranosh was killed by the lich king anyway to be fair

I think that terminology is creating some confusion. Are we accusing Putress and Silvanas of creating The Plague that infected Stratholme and the Plaguelands or The Blight that was used at The Wrathgate and, more recently, in Undercity? Or are we accusing Sylvanas of both? My understanding has always been that The Plague that creates The Scourge predates Arthas' fully becoming The Lich King and the death and raising of Sylvanas Windrunner. It even predates the existence of The Forsaken. I don't mean to nitpick but I have no problem with the idea of Sylvanas being behind creation and use of The Blight but can't quite get my head around her creating and using The Plague. On another, larger narrative point I am not terribly pleased with the story line that makes leaders of my faction, The Horde, as evil, mad and initiators of war and destruction. Can a character as decent and intelligent as Jaina really not see that Garrosh destroyed Theramore and not The Horde generally, The Horde that deposed and imprisoned Garrosh for his crimes? Are we headed toward an Azeroth ethnically cleansed of Trolls, Taurens, Blood Elves, Goblins, Orcs and Undead? If so, what will Pandarens make of that and cleansing of half their population? Is an Azeroth reserved for Humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Worgen and Draenei really the vision of the writers at Blizzard? If so I might be very worried if I were of a visibly non-human race. Won't the humans turn on those within The Alliance who are least like themselves as we do in real life? Isn't the opposition to The Horde rooted in a variant of racism and human supremacy? And, all motives of Sylvanas aside, when will we get an ultimate final boss from The Alliance who must be killed or restrained forever for the good of Azeroth? Both The Horde and The Alliance could cooperate to fight The Lich King and Deathwing do we not need one another to defeat the older, stronger eldritch threat of The Old Gods?
If Sylvanas had in fact ordered the Wrath gate it seems like there would have been some hint of it given at the time. It certainly would have made everything more interesting so why withhold it? Other than Afrasiabe's current statement I didn't see anything in older lore posted that backed this up. I see this as a retcon to salvage a less than popular narrative for this less than popular expansion. IMO they should be feverishly finding a way to vindicate her rather than doubling down although they have badly painted themselves into a corner with the whole tree thing. If you played wrath i think you would have had to develop a certain fondness for sylvanas from halls of reflection and forge of souls. I ran these hundreds of times probably at what I believe was the high point of wow. We invaded the lich kings keep, battled him, and narrowly escaped together. So maybe that is "fanboyism" but I think it is just normal attachment to a main character in a game where someone is presented as a powerful ally and a hero. She was a "good" character in IMO the best expac ever so I think they should have thought twice before garroshing her. Maybe alliance get a different story presented in these dungeons but that is where I came to bond with her. Also always in bc and before it was cool to see her and varimathras standing in the UC throne room. One thing that puzzled me as horde is that after she becomes warchief and gives her speech you go and get a quest from her and she says how something or another "saved me from her bow". Meaning she considered me an enemy but was too busy to bother taking me out. Being the hero of the horde and exalted with UC and having backed her up during wrath I found this quite confusing as it is not explained. I'm pretty sure she even says it to undeads. Perhaps just nonsensical writing again but I didn't play cata or mop either.
Devs has been caught spewing nonsense on lore since vanilla. Until they completely rewrite the in game lore im going to believe that over some guy in a bad interview.
Good reading! Thanks Wowhead.
What happened at the Wrathgate? That's an easy question with an easy answer:The Forsakens' finest hour.We then proceeded to botch capitalizing on it. It's still incredibly irritating that Putress had to be written to be betraying Sylvanas, but I never bought it. It was garbage writing him to be a forsaken traitor. Putress is a forsaken hero and martyr; I don't care what the official lore says he did, the official lore makes no sense.Behold, now, the terrible vengeance of the Forsaken! Death to the living! And death to the scourge!
Aren't undead immune to void influence?
