I hate the idea of being unable to do 3/4 of the covenant content on my character. Would like to see barriers to story removed. This isn't aldor v. scryer bank.
I think they should make the class specific covenant ability changeable like talents. But make the cosmetic rewards and the movement ability tied to the covenants hard to swap between. Would solve the balancing issues for the most part and would keep the hardcore optimizers calm.
In Classic switching talents comes at a cost. The more you do it the more punishing it is. Here it's pretty much the same (maybe a bit harsher).
Great interview and responses. People should make a meaningful and well informed decision based upon their own personal experimentation.
but you could in theory do all 4/4 covenant storylines on a single character. This isn't saying that you can't swap covenants, it's saying that coming back to one you joined previously will have a penalty(how hard that penalty is, is a work in progress), it isn't even impossible. Just a system there to keep an immersive element of loyalty, which in the context of what it sounds like they're planning on doing, I think makes a lot of sense, so long as they can balance covenants gameplay-wise so that different types of content are achievable regardless of what you chose.
Just make the covenant abilities a goddamn talent row. They're just going to end up doing this in 9.3 after everyone hates this system, anyway. Just do it now.
I agree with they're going for.
As long as I pick the best PvP covenant and it won't get nerfed I don't care about changing since PvE is just faceroll anyway (except Mythic raiding which is just not rewarding enough to waste on).
Having an option that is 5% more powerful than any other option is extremely common in WoW as a whole. Classes and specs are never perfectly balanced, and there is always a different top spec every patch. What I think is crazy is that people believe they will be forced into a certain covenant. 8.3 has not forced me to play fire mage, even though they would easily be a 20% improvement. I have actively chosen to not play fire mage. All classes, specs, and covenants will be able to clear all of the content in the game. Pick the covenant that you want to play, much like we all play the classes we want to play. Every situation in WoW makes me have "class envy" sometimes, and I imagine it will be the same with covenants. I'm sure sometimes i'll wish I was Kyrian to clear CCs with their potion, other times I'll wish I am a demon hunter so that I can double jump and glide. It is all the same thing. Power being tied to covenants is extremely similar to most of your other options in the game. This isn't anything new.I agree with what they're going for. People need to take a chill pill and enjoy the game with friends, not with their Raidbots Sims.
What about anyone that wants to play different roles as their offspec, what about the people that like to tank or heal in m+ but dps in raids, nobody will want a dps with a healer covenant and the other way around, what about the people trying to do higher end m+ or pvp and raid at the same time. The utility you need in all those things is very different. Take warrior as example, they can put down a banner giving party members in it attack speed, That's amazing for raid, most likely required for higher end mythic raiding guilds, yet completely useless in arenas or even m+ where you could instead pick a stun that generates you extra rage or a long ass root. Why do you need to be punished for wanting to do different things in the game at a high level.
Makes sense that it shouldn't be easy or quick to switch between covenants, both in terms of lore and gameplay. If you can switch up so much about your character at the drop of a hat, it feels like none of those decisions really mean anything. If I want to go back and do things totally differently, I'd rather make a new alt. Especially now that leveling alts is going to be so much quicker and more fun - I'm looking forward to getting to play through more of the older expansions :)
