The Yearly Marmot
It's the one year anniversary of the Weekly Marmot (well, almost)! In an extra-long extended episode, I go over my history of gaming: how I got into gaming, what games I used to play, how I got into MMOs, and how I got involved with the World of Warcraft community. It's not exactly light viewing, so fix yourself some popcorn and settle in for the
nerdiest story ever told.
And don't worry -- we'll be right back to the regular old information-filled Weekly Marmot next week, for the Patch 4.0 Survival Guide!

Not Going To BlizzCon? Get the Virtual Ticket or DTV Stream!
Every year getting BlizzCon tickets proves to be a phenominal pain in the butt for the majority of Blizzard fans - no matter how much they streamline the purchasing process (which, I'll admit, was significantly better this year) the truth is that most fans won't get tickets. Some people can't justify the expense for the tickets or the travel - after all, other than the "experience" of actually being at BlizzCon, you aren't missing out on much considering there's always more than enough coverage of the events and panels, and thousands of pictures and YouTube videos of every waking second of the convention!
If that isn't enough, though, you can enjoy
BlizzCon 2010
from the comfort of your own home without the experience of red-eye flights or sharing a hotel room with 6 people (what was I thinking?) by ordering one of the two

Running of the Gnomes, Race for a Cure!
Noxy here! I don't write many blog posts, but I was linked
here
by a friend, and I fell in love with the idea.
I'm standing here in Booty Bay, surrounded by lots and lots of little pink gnomes all gathered for the same cause: to support the fight against Breast Cancer.
SeeD is an Alliance side guild on Scarlet Crusade-US, and last year they decided to turn their tabards pink, and post around on the forums letting people know and encouraging them to remind the ladies in their lives to speak to their doctors, and to show how much they care. This year they have organised a fun-run--for each pink gnome that shows, SeeD members have pledged to donate various amounts of money to the Susan G Komen Foundation.
At the peak they reached a total of 160 gnomes, with an estimated $200+ raised. (and thats just the guilds officers! the final total is still yet to be tallied!)

The Weekly Marmot - Guild Restructuring in Cataclysm
This week I answer a handful of great questions from a guy named Helbereth (aka Hellbreath) about a few of the challenges facing guilds -- both new and old -- in the transition period into 4.0 and Cataclysm. Is forming a new guild for Cataclysm a good idea? What kind of challenges will the "hardcore 10-man guild" face? How does this affect loot rules?
Also, don't forget to tune in for Episode 50 next week!

4.0.1: New Flexible Raid Lockout System
A while ago, Blizzard announced that they would be changing the way raid lockouts work so players would no longer be required to raid the same content multiple times a week to increase progression. After a long wait,
Bashiok
has announced the new
Flexible Raid Lockout System
that will be introduced with 4.0.1. At launch, it will only be available for
Die Eiskronenzitadelle
and
Das Rubinsanktum
In these dungeons, you will only have to kill each boss once on any difficulty level to count toward a completion of the instance. For example, you could kill the first 3 bosses in Icecrown one night on 10-player and then the next night get 25 people together and kill
Todesbringer Saurfang
and the rest of the bosses. To help coordinate what bosses you have killed there will be a new UI element that shows you what encounters you have already defeated along with a way for raid leaders to link in chat what they have defeated.
You can check out the full announcement and some more examples by Bashiok after the break.

BFF Report - Warhammer Online Is The Next WoW Killer... Oh Wait..
We hear this from time to time about whatever various games are coming out, but nothing compared to when Warhammer and AoC were announced. For those that were around, it was a mad frenzy of long time tabletop Warhammer players that were on a hate spree in the forums. Now that the game is offering their 'Endless Free Trial', which allows players to experience some of the games features and level to Rank 10, I decided to give it a shot and see just how awesomazing this game was.
For those that don't know, WoW has managed to withstand the 'brutal loss' of its many subscribers to these various 'killers'. For the most part, I think we all agree that the only think that will bring down the game will be Blizzard themselves, or time. Besides those two factors, what single event/game/occurance, do
you
think will have the largest impact on the population? No, 2012 is not an answer.

Huge Cataclysm Site Update! Over 3000+ Items! (Finally)
So, we've been missing a good number of items on our
Cataclysm site
for a little while now, and our db guys have been racking their brains trying to figure out what was wrong. It wasn't until today that someone dug into an old, musty closet full of code and noticed a particular segment that got added a long time ago—specifically, a block of code which was intended to filter out private server items by blocking all items above a certain (very high) item ID #.
Problem is, over the years WoW has added a
lot of items
. So many, in fact, that
legitimate
item IDs are now appearing in numbers above the "absurdly high" threshold we set years ago. We removed that cap, and suddenly new items started importing...
So! Our latest update includes a whopping
3282 new items
, 1 new achievement, 2 new talents, and 160 spells! You can check out all of our latest additions here:

Blizzard Was Teasing Us With The Cata Release Date All Along
A commenter named Ron over at
WoWInsider
pointed out something we missed!
A little while ago in the
Azeroth Bulletin
which we reported
here
, this was posted:
Speaking to a small conglomerate of various Alliance representatives, Mekkatorque pointed out that the time to strike is now. After all, Thermaplugg has eluded death for years to keep his reign over Gnomeregan; and with the fall of the Lich King, the last great threat to the citizens of Azeroth, the chance of any cataclysmic event taking place in the foreseeable future is
"less than 12.7%,"
Mekkatorque's leading combat medical advisor Doc Cogspin purported.
12.7%? 12-7? CURSE YOU BLIZZARD FOR RUBBING IT IN OUR FACES!!!

Likely Cataclysm Release Date: December 7th!
Edit: The release date was right there all along, and we didn't see it! See
this post
for the details!
While poking through the game files for the next patch, we found this little snippet of text!
"Arena battles and Rated Battlegrounds are only available during an active player versus player combat season. Season nine will begin on
December 14th
, so be prepared at that time to take your shot at glory!"
It's official: Season 9 starts on December 14th. Combine this with a blue post from Zarhym...
We are currently planning to end Arena Season 8 as early as October 12. At that point we will go through our normal process to determine who is eligible for the end-of-season rewards. This process should take approximately one week. It's very important for players who feel that they may be eligible for the Arena-specific titles and/or the Wrathful Gladiator’s Frostwyrm to refrain from transferring their characters to another realm or faction until after Arena Season 8 ends.

Battle.net Introduces New Privacy Features
Nethaera
posted a rather big announcement that will hopefully please a lot of people who didn't like Real ID when it launched. Blizzard has introduced
new privacy options
to Battle.Net, including the option to opt-in or opt-out of the controversial "Friends of Friends" feature and the "Add Facebook Friends".
We'd like to make you aware of the new Real ID-related privacy options we've introduced to Battle.net. These options provide Real ID users with additional tools for customizing the service based on their preferences, enabling the ability to opt in or out of the Real ID "Friends of Friends" and "Add Facebook Friends" features or to turn off Real ID altogether.
Real ID offers an optional, convenient way for keeping in touch with real-world friends you know and trust, whether they're playing World of Warcraft, StarCraft II, or one of our future games. The "Friends of Friends" and "Add Facebook Friends" features provide you with even more options to stay connected while you play by making it easier for real-life friends to locate each other on Battle.net.
